Modern capitalism, organising the reduction of all social life to a spectacle, cannot offer any other spectacle than that of our own alienation.quote by: RAOUL VANEIGEM & ATTILA KOTÃNYI

generation terroriststaken from: paragraph 1, called 'NOTHINGNESS OF URBANISM AND NOTHINGNESS OF THE SPECTACLE' of the 'Internationale Situationniste' #6 (August 1961).original text:'URBANISM DOESN'T EXIST; it is only an “ideology' in Marx's sense of the word. Architecture does really exist, like Coca-Cola: though coated with ideology, it is a real production, falsely satisfying a falsified need. Urbanism is comparable to the advertising about Coca-Cola — pure spectacular ideology. Modern capitalism, which organizes the reduction of all social life to a spectacle, is incapable of presenting any spectacle other than that of our own alienation. Its urbanistic dream is its masterpiece.'about the quoted person:raoul vaneigem was a belgian member of the radical international anarchistic and artistic movement 'situationist international'. Along with Guy Debord, the voice of Raoul Vaneigem was one of the strongest of the Situationists. Counterpoised to Debord's political and polemic style, Vaneigem offered a more poetic and spirited prose. The Revolution of Everyday Life (Traité de savoir-vivre à l'usage des jeunes générations), published in the same year as The Society of the Spectacle of guy debord, helped broaden and balance the presentation of the SI's theories and practices. One of the longest SI members, and frequent editor of the journal Internationale Situationniste, Vaneigem finally left the SI in November of 1970, citing their failures as well as his own in his letter of resignation. Soon after, Debord issued a typically scathing response denouncing both Vaneigem and his critique of the Situationist International.the Belgian/Hungarian Attila Kotanyi was also a member of the situanionist international, but he was excluded October 1963. he wrote several articles, some together with raoul vaneigem and guy debord.the 'Internationale Situationniste' was a central bulletin published by the sections of the situationist international. this quote speaks about debord's theory about the way capitalism destroys our worldview, which he set out in the society of the spectacle.you can read many texts by the situationists online: click here.
