about the quoted person:this quote is taken from a scene in francis ford coppola's 1979 movie
apocalypse now. this movie is about the Burnt out Captain Willard who is sent into the jungle with orders to find and kill Colonel Kurtz (played by marlon brando, see "The more sensitive you are...") who has set up his own army within the jungle. As he descends into the jungle he is slowly over taken by the jungles mesmerizing powers and the battles and insanity which surround him. His crew begins to succumbs to drugs and are slowly killed off one by one. As Willard continues his journey he begins to become more and more like the man he was sent to kill. colonel kurtz has created his own empire in the jungle, with people worshipping him as a god. he tries to be extreme pure: to live according to strict moral rules and not to listen to his own passions or orders from others.as coppola said, this movie is not about vietnam, it is about madness. about absurdity. one of theSE mad scenes is the one in which THE colonel who guides them in the first stage of their journey, finds out that one of HIS privats is a famous surfer. he wants him to surf on a vietnamese beach, when around them people are killed and napalm is thrown over the village. this is the scene where the quote "i'll surf this beach" is taken from.
