After completing national service at a remote RAF station, Hughes studied at Cambridge University and began publishing his poems in literary journals. In 1956, he met the American poet Sylvia Plath and they were married in June of that year. Plath's suicide in early 1963 - and the astonishing poems she left behind -made a substantial mark on the literary landscape, and followed Hughes for the rest of his life. Ted Hughes died in October 1998 in Devonshire, England.
