Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York Globe, established the Pulitzer Prize in 1917 through an endowment to Columbia University. Annually this Award is given for achievements in American fiction, drama, poetry, history, biography or autobiography, and general nonfiction. In 1943 a music price was added.

time magazine of a starving Sudanese girl who collapsed on her way to a feeding center while a vulture waited nearby (see
