The son of Jean Kennedy Smith and businessman and Kennedy campaign manager Stephen E. Smith, a member of the famous american kennedy-family. Smith was visiting his Uncle Ted at the family compound in Palm Beach, Florida, when he was accused of rape in March 1991 by Patricia Bowman. He was later acquitted in a trial that drew international attention and raised a media circus.

Subsequently, in October 1993, Smith was arrested outside an Arlington, Virginia, bar for assault and battery. He mistook a bouncer outside the bar for the friend of a heckler inside who had called him 'the rapist,' and punched him.
