biblical figure, mentioned in the book of jonah. A prophet who ran away from God and was swallowed by a giant fish or whale. He repented and was sent to the city of Ninevah and warned them of God's judgment. Jonah learned, to his dismay, that God would forgive even a heathen city if the people were sorry for their sins.
