american singer and actor, born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935.
Elvis' musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, gospel music and black R&B. In 1954, he began his singing career with the Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation and he was nick-named 'the king'. With a sound and style that combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.elvis starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records.
Known THROUGHOUT the world by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died on his toilet at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977. the official story is that he died of a heart attack, but it is also rumoured that he had this heart attack because he ate too much, which gave him his other nickname 'the
burger king'. the manics were fascinated by elvis' death; one of their favourite books was albert goldman's 'elvis: the last 24 hours'. the main thesis of this book is that elvis' inner pain may have caused him to take his own life. It is a detailed accounting (based mostly on information from Elvis's stepbrother, David Stanley) of the last 24 hours of Elvis's life. The basic theme of the book is to correct errors from Goldman's previous book (the controversial 1982 biography, 'Elvis'). In the 1982 book, Goldman had posited that that Presley died of a massive heart attack caused by years of drug dependency and eating like a glutton.
Now in this later book, Goldman claims that there were inaccuracies in his previous accounting of Presley's death. Now, says Goldman, new evidence indicates that Presley did not die of natural causes, but instead killed himself by overdosing on a stash of drugs that he stockpiled. Supposedly David Stanley, not wanting to see Elvis's name tarred with the brush of suicide, got rid of the needles and drug packets near Presley's body before the paramedics arrived.
