Nabokov turned down director stanley Kubrick's offer to adapt his novel to the screen but changed his mind after having a dream wherein he was reading the screenplay. His 400 page script was far to long and even his shortened version proved unsatisfactory. In the end, Kubrick and producer James Harris rewrote the script, leaving, by Nabokov's estimate, only about 20% of his work. Nabokov later called the film a disappointment.
The main change from the novel was in moving the final confrontation between Humbert and Quilty to the beginning of the film and having the events leading up to it told as a flashback. Kubrick determined that while this sacrificed a great ending, it helped maintain interest throughout the film, as interest in the novel sagged halfway through once Humbert was successful in getting Lolita into bed.
about this movie:
Despite the scandalous reputation of Vladimir Nabokov's novel, parents across America offered up their daughters for the part, but Kubrick chose Sue Lyon after seeing her on The Loretta Young Show. other actors starring in 'lolita' are Peter Sellers, James Mason, Shelley Winters and Marianne Stone.
The controversial nature of this movie proved problematic even after production, as Kubrick noted: "At the time I made it, it was almost impossible to get the film played. Even after it was finished, it laid around for six months.
