synopsis:
the future described in this sci/fi-movie is based on the complete invasion of everyone's privacy, via genetic engineering and DNA testing. Stressed out parents leave nothing and they weed out genetically inferior embryos. Employers hire people according to the genetic information provided in the applicant's urine or blood sample.
The story is told from the point of view of vincent, who was born the natural way when his parents decided on bringing their first child into the world through love. However, after his birth, and through several genetic tests, doctors tell his parents that he will have a 99% chance of a weak heart, as well as poor eye sight and a short life span. As a result, both parents decide to bring their next baby into the world via genetics. Anton is produced without flaws, and the competition between brothers spawns. Vincent has a dream to fly a solo-flight around the Titan, the 14th moon of Saturn, but because of his condition, Gattaca, and society in general, forces him to do menial labor around Gattaca."Gattaca" is the name of a space agency where the preparation for man's first journey to Saturn's moon, Titan, is in progress. Among the people vying to leave Earth and explore Titan is someone who goes by the name of Jerome Morrow. Morrow is fully qualified for this job: he has the right genetic material that puts him a cut above all the rest in terms of mental and physical skills.
The catch is that Jerome Morrow is really Vincent. he has managed to infiltrate the elite space agency by faking his identity - right down to the nucleic acid level. Vincent routinely obtains blood, hair, and urine samples from the real Jerome Morrow to pass identification and screening tests. The real Morrow is not able to realise his potential since he was crippled in an accident, and therefore needs Vincent as much as Vincent needs him.
Throw in some sibling rivalry between Vincent and his "valid" brother, a murder sub-plot, and a love interest for Vincent, you end up with 'Gattaca'. The story is essentially about how Vincent overcomes the programming in his in-valid genes and competes against the best in the "valid" world, while the real jerome morrows kills himself in the end.about this movie:The morality of genetic selection is explored in 'Gattaca', starring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and uma thurman. Although set in the future the technological developments are downplayed with a sterile, featureless working environment and retro looking cars. The focus is on undesirable changes to society, in a similar vein to
a clockwork orange [movie],
1984 [book] and
brave new world.
