synopsis:
Carrie White is the quiet, lonely girl at her school who always gets laughed at and picked on. She's the timid young girl with a special gift that allows her to move things with her mind when she concentrates enough. Nobody knows about this gift except her fundamentalist
christian mum, who's insanely possessive of her daughter. carrie doesn't know anything about life. The reason Carrie hasn't learned anything at home is because her mother is a religious fanatic, and believes that anything to do with sex and reproduction is sinful. When she learns that her daughter has "become a woman," she forces the girl to join her in period of frenzied prayer.
Carrie struggles to control her special powers, because when she gets angry, things go haywire. her god-fearing mother doesn't help her situation by not letting her do anything. When it comes round to prom time Carrie is unexpectedly invited to go with the polular Tommy Ross, but unbeknown to them the kids that bully her have a surprise waiting for them. When they pull their little stunt all hell breaks loose and Carrie uses her bizzare, telekinetic powers to get back at all thoses who she sees as her enemies; they all meet an untimely death.

The film earned two
Oscar nominations - almost unheard of for a horror film - for Sissy Spacek in the title role and Piper Laurie as Carrie's mad fundamentalist mom.
