synopsis:
told from the perspective of the main character, clay, this is the cold, disturbing description of the lives of a group of teenagers in los angeles, the sons and daughters of filmproducers, lawyers and other wealthy uptown citizens. their days revolve around sex and drugs, consuming and spending their money. they don't know any real desire or love, as they have everything. it's hard to give a good synopsis of this book, as there is no real plot, but it's enough to say that clay, throughout the book, is seeking for the 'worst possible thing' he can experience, and in the end, he finds it.
on this book:
it would take another six years for him to really break through (with american psycho), but in this book we already find ellis' fascination with characters living in a complete moral void. this book may require to be read in a somewhat different way then other novels, but once you're hooked to ellis' style, you'll keep reading.
In 1987, a film adaptation of this book was made by marek kanievska, but Apart from the setting and the names, the film has very little to do with the book.see also:
